This book touches on a subject that is a taboo in our society, even though mental illness knows no boundaries. Jeffrey Fidel does not go into a lot of detail, and is a bit vague explaining major turning points in his life. He instead expounds on the mental steps that lead to his inward journey, and only then does he experience the peace he craves. In the past he would enter a state of mindlessness that gave him a sense of “escape drug”. It enhanced his physical sense of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. He found this behavior was not acceptable by society and was discouraged.
What I liked best about this book is the inside understanding from someone who knows what mental illness feels like. This book lets you know you are not alone, but also helps others comprehend that mental struggles are real, not a choice.

Being human, it means everything and at the same time it means nothing, our
mind and words are our most powerful weapons, but even us as humans have
boundaries, mental illness for whatever reason, knows no boundaries.
Jeff Fidel gives us a glimpse of how many mental steps take to inward your
journey, although he does not explain some things, everything is important and
should take it into account, even for today standards this subject is still treated
like a taboo because it underwhelms the subject who suffers it and it’s let aside
as useless, and that’s not right.
This book is a welcome sign for everyone out there who suffers for this disease
or because of it. Let us all demonstrate the world that the real peace is not
something far away to reach, that we can make it, let us not just write on a
social media page about worldwide peace and instead make it real.
I am fortunate to have been the editor on this project of Jeff Fidel's. I wholeheartedly recommend you read this important book. Jeff's a very creative writer, and the story he has to tell is one that touches every one of us. He is someone who, truly, knows his own mind in this book, he lets You share an amazing journey he took to the very depths of his mind--using his heart as the vehicle--to realize the most basic truth about being human.
It's a really good read!
I have to say that it’s strange to say I enjoyed a book on the subject of bipolar. I have a friend who had a close family member with bipolar, so the book peaked my interest. Jeffrey Fidel’s story is quite fascinating, as painful a subject as bipolar might be. It would be unfair to say I could relate to his experiences on a deep level - but at times it felt close. His story reaches the spiritual and gives hope for those who struggle like he does. I felt emotional through sections of the book. It made me wish there were more things that could be done to comfort those with bipolar .. yet to see hope in the way he found moments of peace and relief. It’s clear that the pain is so real, and why the perspective from someone who has bipolar so valuable. The message of turning off the voices in ones head and listening to the voice in ones heart is both touching and so beautiful to read. And that’s why I loved the book.
Without ever being condescending or preachy, Jeffrey Fidel delivers an unforgettable personal account and guidebook for others suffering through one of the most misunderstood maladies in the world - mental illness. More specifically, he struggled with bipolar disorder, a condition that I am personally connected to, as I know certain people who suffer from the condition. Medication and constant vigilance seem like an unavoidable part of treatment for bipolar disorder, but as a medical doctor, Fidel offers a new perspective that worked for him. Rather than being a slave to the other voices in his head, or the impulses and personalities that were tormenting his "normal" life, he focused on redirecting his attention and energy, allowing only a single voice to dictate his actions and choices. By combining Western medical knowledge with Eastern philosophy and treatment methods, Dr. Fidel found a way to take control of his life back. That personal journey would be enough for a great book worthy of a read, but his desire to serve and help others is what makes this even more powerful. He writes intimately about personal struggles, gives readers hope that they too can change their lives, without becoming a numb zombie on daily cocktails of pharmaceuticals.
As someone who must interact with and often comfort people with bipolar disorder, this book was incredibly enlightening and inspiring. Spirituality as a cure for bipolar disorder seems a bit of a long stretch, but a proactive pursuit of mental strength is something I can get behind. He spells out his beliefs and personal methods of management in this book, and for those dealing with bipolar disorder who are willing to think outside the box of Big Pharma, this book could truly change your life. He is a wise and well-spoken writer, and a doctor preaching the best kind of medicine - healing that comes from within.
